DragWeek 12 sponsored by Gear Vendors has come and gone but one thing stayed the same. The Unlimited and Overall title once again went to Larry Larson and his famed 1966 Chevy II.
DW 12 was the toughest yet starting off with a eye opening 6.94 at Tulsa Raceway Park with the possibility of a six second run and average at every track and looking like this might be the year.
Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Tx. soon put a halt to all those thoughts on Tuesday. A rolled sprag in the burnout equated to pulling the trans and later a 7.10.
On to Shreveport, La. and the problems continue with an electrical issue. Meanwhile nemesis Jeff Lutz ran his fastest pass ever, a 7.001. After repairing the problem a 7.28 was all the track would handle in the heat of the afternoon.
Rain at daylight and a long day ahead was to be at Memphis, Tn. After putting down a stout 7.03 and Jeff now struggling one more pass was in order. Unfortunately 4500 miles on a ring and pinion and some uninvited tire shake from earlier in the week would lead to the breakage on that second run. With some help from the locals and 6 hours later it would be a quiet night back to Tulsa with a new ring and pinion.
Not so easy was the trip as 45 miles out at 3:30 am. the rain began. Arrival at the track was finally accomplished by 8:30 only to watch it mist and rain the rest of the day. At this point in time the Chevy II and 57 were separated by just thousanths.
Due to Hot Rod and Tulsa Raceway Park rescheduling for Saturday it would be a battle to the end, no rainout! By the time it started to rain again around 2:00 one more 6.940 was in order. With Jeff still struggling it carried into the closest winning margin ever on DW but once again Larry was victorious for an unbelievable 5th DW crown.
Thanks to everyone that played a part in this record!
